Fisher explains why Jackson triangle hasn’t stuck with players

Knicks coach Derek Fisher said he has extra challenges in getting his current young players to believe the triangle offense wins titles because team president Phil Jackson has been out of coaching for a while.

Fisher said when Jackson joined the Lakers, he had the "credibility'' of having dominated the basketball world so recently in Chicago. That's not the case now.

On Wednesday, the recently traded J.R. Smith told The Post's Kevin Kernan the triangle makes you "have to think too much'' and said "everybody was walking on eggshells'' trying to figure out Jackson's attempt at a culture change.

Though defense has been the big issue for the Knicks, who lost again Thursday to fall to 5-34, the struggle to learn a new system has been a major theme this season.

"When I played, the credibility Phil and his staff had came when he walked in the door,'' Fisher said before the 120-96 loss to the Rockets. "We were all intrigued in wanting to figure it out, knowing they won championships doing this. We wanted to figure out how to win championships within this format.''

Jackson won his most recent title five years ago in 2010, and resigned after being swept by Dallas in the second round of the 2011 playoffs.

"In recent years, Phil wasn't coaching and there weren't any teams running this system," Fisher said. "So these current players can't say this team won a championship last year or two years ago doing it.

Let's try to do it that way. We're having to create belief we can have a run within this and just play basketball.''

Nevertheless, the pressure is off Fisher to win now after Jackson's fire sale essentially gave up any chance of the Knicks turning things around and making a playoff push.

The Knicks have been removed from three national TV games — Jan. 28 against the Thunder, Feb. 6 at the Nets and March 25 vs. the Clippers. The Knicks were scheduled for 23 national games this season, including Thursday's game against the Rockets on TNT that was spared.
