Synergy is all the rage at Time Warner

Synergy is all the rage at Time Warner — just don't call it that.

With a relatively fresh management team in place, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes used Wednesday's investor day to underscore how the executives running HBO, Warner Bros. and Turner Broadcasting are cooperating to their benefit and that of shareholders.

Synergy became a dirty word at Time Warner after the disastrous merger with AOL in 2001. The marriage of traditional and new media orchestrated just as the first Internet bubble burst destroyed billions in shareholder wealth.

In 2006, then Time Warner president Jeff Bewkes told the WSJ that, "No division should subsidize another,' adding that the synergy message preached under the AOL regime was "bulls- -t ."

Now, Time Warner units are embracing unity as a friendlier group of leaders begin pulling for one another, insiders said. The top executive line-up includes Turners John Martin, HBO's Richard Plepler and Warner Bros.' Kevin Tsujihara.

Former AOL boss Steve Case tweeted news of HBO's new over-the-top service along with the 2010 press release of the AOL Time Warner merger writing: "Convergence!!!" and #blastfromthepast #15yearslater.

Bewkes told a crowd of investors, "We're seeing collaboration increase." Warner boss Kevin Tsujihara revealed his division is making a show on the cocaine trade for TNT from Jerry Bruckheimer and is developing a series called "Titans," based on DC Comics characters. Warner also made HBO's "Leftovers," series and has more to come.

Turner's TBS will begin airing Warner's "Two Broke Girls," while HBO is making documentaries for Turner's CNN including, "Terror at the Mall."
The closer collaboration is aimed at boosting businesses that seem to have suffered from a lack of coordination.

"We are dramatically under punching in kids," said Turner chief John Martin, who revealed that Cartoon Network and Adult Swim are exploring the release of over-the-top programming.

"The domestic and the international didn't coordinate and we lost opportunities to build characters and franchises." He added the firm has completely reoriented towards a collaborative approach. "Warner Bros and Turner are committing to approach the kids business as one company."
