Cable-TV chieftain Ken Lowe knows a good roast.
The head of Scripps Networks Interactive, which owns the Food Network and Cooking Channel, was the subject of some saucy jokes last week at the Center for Communication's annual Frank Stanton Award luncheon at the Pierre Hotel in Midtown.
Former Food Network boss Judy Girard told the crowd that while she had never slept with her handsome boss, she had displayed some bad judgment by parading a giant phallic banana and some fake melons around Times Square to promote foodie fare — much to the chagrin of late chairman Charles Scripps.
Showtime CEO Matt Blank — who compared Lowe to Will Ferrell's "Anchorman" character Ron Burgundy — remarked on the Scripps CEO's sartorial splendor, saying he wore his cuff links to bed and that his idea of casual Friday was to leave his cummerbund at home.
Blank also showed a photo of Lowe shoveling dirt and added his own caption: "I know we left Paula Deen somewhere." Food Network dumped the Southern chef after allegations of racism were leveled against her.
Lowe, who hails from Mount Airy, NC, said he was disappointed by all the network shows that portray Southerners as unsophisticated, ranging from "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" to "Duck Dynasty."
"Cable programming is denigrating people from the South," he said, adding, "That means 'put down' for those who are from the South."
One of the biggest revelations came from Girard, who revealed that some of the original network stars could barely cook when they got their start.
Julia Child, the original TV chef and author, told Girard she was making a mistake by focusing on the food.
"Look for personalities and teach them how to cook," Girard said Child advised her.
Girard turned to British chef Jamie Oliver, who could "cook a bit," but got on air because he "had an innocent sexiness about him."
