Illegal cab seizures have plummeted this year after The Post revealed widespread abuse by TLC bosses of officers to take more cars off the road — even wrongly accusing innocent drivers.
The number of private cars that the Taxi and Limousine Commission seized dropped 22 percent in 2014 through the end of August, compared with the same period last year, according to agency data.
Investigators seized 4,447 cars in 2013 compared with 3,496 in 2014. Last August, inspectors seized 105 private cars, a 85 percent plunge from 721 cars in 2013.
The media's scrutiny of the agency has been coupled with lawsuits from drivers who say inspectors wrongly accused them of being bogus cabbies.
"Officers are concerned about taking seizures because of the negative exposure, threat of pending lawsuits, and the lack of protection from supervisors," said a TLC source.
Other sources credited with the dip to a greater focus on training and proper seizure protocol after the heightened media attention.
The TLC said the drop in seizures is because of the enforcement focus on Vision Zero– the mayor's plan to end traffic deaths on city streets.
Officers have issued almost 5,000 safety-related tickets to hacks so far this year– a 95 percent jump from 2013.
"We have a vigilant and effective enforcement program that sees the seizures and removal of thousands of illegal for-hire vehicles from our road each year," said TLC rep Allan Fromberg.
"Our Vision Zero priorities have enhanced our safety violation enforcement by 147 percent, while still maintaining a vigilant and effective seizure program."
