It might seem like an overnight success, but Tove Lo's chart-topping "Habits" has been years in the making. The Swedish singer has hit No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Rock Songs Charts with her catchy, but emotionally wrenching tale of drowning herself in drugs and alcohol following a traumatic breakup (she sings in the chorus: "I gotta stay high all the time/to keep you off my mind").
"It's weird talking about it because it was nearly three years ago, and now I sing about it almost every day," she tells The Post. The 26-year-old's debut album, "Queen of the Clouds," drops on Sept. 30. Here's how her "Habits" came to be.
The Real-life Ex
Although Tove Lo (pronounced "too-vey loo") sings "Habits" with an obvious sadness, she admits it was her ex-boyfriend who probably ended up worse off. "We had a very passionate relationship but there was also a lot of fighting and I ended up hurting him quite badly."
The Messy Lyrics
In the song, Lo is painfully honest about the lengths she went to cover up her pain — with lines like "binge on all my Twinkies/I throw up in the tub . . . I drank up all my money" — but she did use a bit of artistic license. "I didn't actually go to playgrounds to pick up daddies," she laughs. "Although I did date an older guy when I was 17. He took me to the playground with his 6-year-old kid. It was pretty awkward!"
The Provocative Video
Shot in Stockholm, the video for "Habits" was filmed with a harness attached to Lo as she goes on a bender, drinking heavily and making out with both male and female friends. The revelry is cut up with shots of her crying alone in a bathroom. "I was exhausted and drunk so when the directors told me to cry, it took two seconds" she says. "It was like my version of method acting."
