WASHINGTON — Former White House press secretary Jay Carney kicked off his new job as an analyst on CNN by running into a hot-headed Sen. John McCain in what turned into a TV slugfest.
Carney made his post-governmental debut Wednesday, immediately after President Obama delivered his prime-time speech on ISIS.
Appearing from California, Carney looked tanned and rested, but things immediately got heated when McCain started blasting him on Iraq and Syria.
"I'm astounded that Mr. Carney should say that the Free Syrian Army is now stronger," said McCain, who lost the 2008 presidential race to Obama, Carney's ex- boss.
"That's not what I said, Senator," Carney shot back.
The two went at it over Obama's inability to negotiate keeping a residual troop force in Iraq.
"You know, Mr. Carney, you are again saying facts that are patently false," McCain said at one point as the two talked over one another.
"Senator, I can posit with great respect for you that we can disagree on that," Carney interjected.
"No, you can't, because you don't have the facts," McCain reslied.
Asked about the spat Thursday, Carney told The Post: "I felt fine about the exchange," and criticized McCain for the "mammoth" mistake of supporting the Iraq invasion in 2003.
"Maybe it was unusual for him to have somebody, rather than him lecture to the press, have somebody challenge his falsehoods," McCain responded.
