New York's public libraries are in a state of disrepair and need more than a billion dollars in repairs, according to a local think tank.
Leaky roofs, busted heating and air conditioning systems and a lack of electrical outlets are just a few of the problems plaguing many of the city's 207 library branches, the Center for an Urban Future said.
"With such an aging building stock, it's not surprising that the city's libraries are on the verge of a maintenance crisis," the report says. "The city's three library systems have at least $1.1 billion in capital needs, and that's mainly just to bring the branches into a state of good repair. Bringing them into the 21st century would require an even greater investment."
