Wendy Williams won't have a summer vacation this year — but she's not complaining.
Williams' syndicated talk show, "The Wendy Williams Show," will tape throughout the summer months for the second consecutive year after a strong season, eschewing the standard industry hot-weather hiatus.
"I'm so excited about being on-air over the summer again," Williams told me via e-mail. "Last year was the first time we extended our run through June and July and my viewers responded with such enthusiasm that we wanted to reward them again this year for their loyalty."
"Wendy Williams" averaged nearly 2 million viewers this season and finished May tops in its New York timeslot (10 a.m./Ch. 5) with a 2.1 rating.
Nationally, the show was up 19 percent in households and women 25-54 from last season (through May 18). That's the largest gain, in that demo, among all 11 returning talk shows this season.
"So much entertainment and celebrity news breaks over summer that I can't possibly wait for the new season in September to talk about all those juicy Hot Topics," Williams said. "I'm really looking forward to staying in that purple chair for the next couple of months, which also means I can celebrate my 50th birthday [July 18] with my Wendy Watchers!"
Meanwhile … in the "One door shuts, another opens" department, the cancellation late Friday of "The Arsenio Hall Show" was preceded, just shortly, by the news that Tyra Banks will return with a new talk show in 2015.
The "America's Next Top Model" host, who helmed daytime's "The Tyra Banks Show" from 2005-2010, has inked a deal with ABC to host an (as-yet-untitled) daytime show that will feature a roster of lifestyle experts, covering a wide range of issues. As it stands now, the daily syndicated show will also feature celebrity guests. It doesn't have a target airdate or station lineup, yet — but it's a good bet to end up on ABC-owned stations, which are currently airing Katie Couric's cancelled daytime talk show, "Katie," and could use a placeholder this coming season until Banks' show is ready to go.
Last, but not least…
Michelle Javian (Harboring Hearts) was chosen as one of the 2014 "CNN Heroes." Her segment repeats Monday at 10 p.m. on CNN
ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" drew its second-largest overall sweeps audience (2.7 million) last month — the most-watched May in the show's history.
Meanwhile, the show's YouTube channel logged over 13 million video views (May 22-27) for the seventh edition of "Celebrities Read Mean Tweets," which is the most-watched clip in the "Mean Tweets" series.
