‘Rising Star’ goes high-tech for real-time voting

It helps to have a gimmick when launching a new singing competition show in a tV landscape already littered with "The Voice," "American Idol," "The X Factor" and "The Sing-Off."

the gimmick for "Rising Star," premiering Sunday at 9 p.m. on ABC, is that it's more app than tV show. Based on a hit Israeli series, "Rising Star" eliminates the need for
drawn-out results shows a la "Idol" by having viewers vote at home, in real time, to advance or eliminate contestants.

"this is going to rely entirely on families getting together in front of the tV and saying,
'We want this person to win or we don't think this person has it,' and they decide," host Josh Groban said in a recent appearance on "Good Morning America."

Viewers vote by downloading the free "Rising Star" app, checking-in within 90 seconds of a singer's performance, then swiping "yes" or "no." the tally is immediately displayed on-screen, with contestants needing 70 percent of the vote to advance.

If a singer hits the threshold, the show's signature two-ton, three-story wall — filled with photos of online supporters — then lifts, advancing him or her to the next level. If not, the wall stays down and the singer goes home at the end of the song.

"Rising Star" will air live in all time zones except the West Coast — though those viewers' votes will still count. If a contestant who didn't advance in the live show reaches 70 percent on the West Coast, he or she will still move through — with a live cut-in showing the saved singer's reaction.

"We met with mathematicians and statisticians. the chances of there being a big difference [in votes] are apparently very small," the show's executive producer Nicole Yaron, told the Hollywood Reporter. "We have this in place just in case, but we don't know that we'll ever have to use it."

Producing live tV — especially a show relying so heavily on technology — comes with inherent risk.

(Last summer, NBC's similarly ambitious live game show "Million Second Quiz" saw its app crash on premiere night.)

But "Rising Star" producers have prepared for potential snafus by instituting fail-safe voting methods and contingency plans in case too many or not enough singers are voted through.

"Anything can happen," Groban said to "GMA" of the live format. "I can't say with complete certainty that it will go off without a hitch, but I think the hitches make things more interesting."
