On Wednesday, Rachel Canning — the New Jersey teen whose lawsuit against her mom and dad became national news — returned to where she belongs: home.
Plainly, that's what Superior Court Judge Peter Bogaard had in mind this month, when he refused to force the parents to pay the money their daughter had demanded. "Do we want to establish a precedent where parents live in basic fear of establishing rules of the house?" asked the judge. The subtext was clear: Even if there are still issues, including the suit, better Rachel and her folks work them out over the kitchen table than in a courtroom.
We agree.
The Cannings will have a tough time of it even in the best of circumstances, because so much of their lives has been laid bare before the public. That's in good part because of the meddling lawyer who brought Canning into his home and fronted her the money for a suit that undermined her parents — and put the family's dirty laundry out for the world to see.
In so doing, attorney John Inglesino helped transform Rachel from another rebellious teen into America's most well-known brat. What a terrible service this "adult" has rendered this young woman.
We wish the Canning family well. As for Inglesino, with any luck he will at least be stuck with the legal bill. Because the great injustice here is that he will not be stuck with the notoriety Rachel Canning will be dealing with for a very long time to come.
