Four American troops flying into revolution-torn South Sudan to evacuate US citizens were injured when militants opened fire on their aircraft, causing the mission to be aborted.
The troops were heading Saturday to the rebel-held town of Bor on three CV-22 Ospreys, which hover like helicopters and fly like planes, The Washington Post reported Sunday. The craft were diverted to Uganda.
The wounded were flown to Nairobi, Kenya, for medical treatment, the newspaper said, adding that they were in stable condition.
More than 15,000 people, including Americans, are reported to have fled from the fighting and sought refuge at a UN base in Bor.
President Obama on Wednesday ordered 45 troops to the capital, Juba, to protect the US Embassy and Americans living in the country.
South Sudan became an independent state in July 2011.
