The Bronx moves to a Latin groove, Brooklyn rocks out indie style, Queens dances to a techno beat, Manhattan embraces pop, and Staten Island goes One Direction.
Music lovers in each of New York's five boroughs show remarkably varied tastes when it comes to picking their favorite online tunes, the Internet music-streaming service Spotify has found.
Over the past 30 days, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens listeners made the indie rock group Haim — and its song "The Wire" — their No. 1 pick.
But that's where the similarities end.
"I think that's what was most interesting . . . that tastes of music listeners were quite different [by borough]," said Shanon Cook, the music service's trend spotter.
"I thought it'd be a more unified New York sound."
- In The Bronx, Latin artist Romeo Santos' "Propuesta Indecente" has been the No. 1 song streamed over the past 30 days on Spotify.
Veteran Latin stars Marc Anthony ("Vivir Mi Vida") and Enrique Iglesias ("Loco") came in at Nos. 3 and 8, respectively.
- Brooklyn hipsters lived up to their indie rep by streaming Haim's "The Wire" and Arcade Fire's "Reflektor" in the top two spots.
But Brooklynites also placed hip-hop artists Santigold ("Disparate Youth") and Danny Brown ("Side A") and 16-year-old singer-songwriter Lorde ("Biting Down") in the next three slots.
- While Manhattan music lovers had a fair share of indie acts on their playlist, the island couldn't hide its love affair with mainstream stars John Mayer and Katy Perry.
Mayer's "Who You Love" and Perry's "Dark Horse" were snuggled up at Nos. 8 and 9, respectively.
- Queens music listeners were the most difficult to peg.
Following Haim, Badfinger's 1971 classic, "Baby Blue," came in at No. 2 following its prominent use in the finale of AMC's "Breaking Bad."
Out of nowhere, electronic dance music favorite Cash Cash ("Take Me Home") and Swedish DJ Sebastian Ingrosso ("Lose My Mind") came in at Nos. 3 and 9.
- Staten Island was dominated by teeny-bopper hit makers One Direction. The British boy band's "Little Things" and "Kiss You" were ranked Nos. 2 and 9.
Girl group and "The X Factor" contestants Fifth Harmony had the island's No. 4 hit with "Miss Movin' On."
