Nets’ Williams tweaks left ankle

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Deron Williams said Tuesday he was starting to feel like his old self again.

So, of course, Williams tweaked his left ankle — the previously healthy one — in Wednesday night's 107-86 loss to the Kings.

"I'm good," Williams said of his ankle after scoring 13 points to go along with seven assists and four turnovers. "I'm good."

Williams appeared to step on Andray Blatche's foot midway through the second quarter, causing him to go to the ground and come up limping on the ankle, but he never left the game, and even drove past Kings point guard Greivis Vasquez for a layup shortly thereafter.

But it was Vasquez who vastly outplayed Williams, finishing with 17 points and 12 assists to just two turnovers, while Williams had 13 points, seven assists and four turnovers in just one of many aspects of the game the Nets fell far short in.

"We're digging ourselves a hole, and we don't want to be in a hole the whole season," Williams said. "We can't keep saying it's going to happen the next game. It's got to happen soon.

Williams tweaking his previously healthy ankle came just as he was starting to look like himself again after spending virtually all of training camp recovering from a sprained right ankle and corresponding bone bruise he suffered in a workout in Utah in September.

"My legs are catching up to me," Williams said before the game. "Six months of being off of basketball will do that to you, with no training camp, no practices really … jumping into games is tough.

"But, at the same time, we haven't been practicing much, so that was kind of like my practice. The first four games were like practice for me, so I'm definitely feeling better now and my legs are coming back, and hopefully that will help.

"Every day I'm getting stronger and stronger, so every day helps."

With the Nets now having lost three straight games and four of their last five, they need Williams healthy and playing the way he did the second half of last season more than ever.

"I think it's shown [that] in practice," Paul Pierce said of Williams getting back I the swing of things. "He's practicing more and more. A lot of times during the preseason he couldn't practice, even in the first regular season game he couldn't make it through a full practice.

"Over the last week or so, he's going hard, getting full practices and getting more and more comfortable."
