How The Post published the JFK tragedy

Readers who rushed to buy The Post 50 years ago today to learn about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy might recognize today's front page.

It's the same one that announced the tragedy just hours after Kennedy was killed.

For many New Yorkers, the first news about the unthinkable act of evil came from the block-letter headline: "JFK SHOT TO DEATH."

The Post, which published in the afternoon, was the only New York paper to get out two separate extra editions in the 40 minutes between the first bulletin of the shooting and the announcement that the president was dead.

But the rushed edition didn't get everything right. The name of the newly sworn-in president, Lyndon Johnson, was misspelled by a typesetter. The Page 1 caption called him "Lydon."

The pages that followed were filled with dispatches about the gunfire, the motorcade and the frenzied dash to Parkland Memorial Hospital.

But editors had initially been in the dark about the shooting, and had to scramble to make up for lost time.

At about 1:45 p.m. (EST), 15 minutes after the shooting, a press foreman appeared in the newsroom to ask when the paper would remake its front page.

Asked why, the stunned foreman replied: "Because the president's been shot."

Despite the bells that sounded in the wire room with each breaking story, a clerk assigned to monitor the teletype machines missed the initial dispatch.

Days later, The Post scored a major exclusive, reporting that, at age 13, Lee Harvey Oswald had been held in a Bronx juvenile facility. Oswald's probation officer provided The Post with the complete file.
