A queasy dramatization of the story of the killers who carried out the Beltway Sniper attacks in 2002, "Blue Caprice" takes a minimalist, documentary-style approach that proves harrowingly effective.
Lee Boyd Malvo (Tequan Richmond) was a lost teen living in Antigua in the 1990s when he met a charismatic American (Isaiah Washington) who quickly became his foster father. In the charming older man's company were his children, whom he had kidnapped from his ex-wife.
The two moved to Tacoma, Wash., where the older man — John Allen Muhammad — began spinning a frightening tale of his thirst for vengeance against his ex-wife and those who had testified against him in his custody fight. As the vacuous boy looks on, Muhammad explains that the two of them must carry out a series of random murders in order to sow terror against the injustice of it all.
The menacing but paternal Washington penetrates deep into the abyss, and the matter-of-fact tone by director Alexandre Moors in this captivating debut makes the brutality of the two men's twisted plan all the more shocking. Some viewers may find this quiet, methodical film slow-moving, but Moors properly lets the banality of evil speak for itself.
