Archrival Red Sox blast Yankees once again

BOSTON — If the Yankees wind up sitting out October, they likely will have the Red Sox to blame.

After Friday night's 8-4 loss at Fenway Park, the Yankees have dropped four of their last five to their AL East rivals. Despite the possibility the Red Sox could help end the Yankees' season, David Ortiz insisted he took no added pleasure in knocking the Bombers out.

"We're just playing hard and trying to bury everybody," Ortiz said. "We're not trying to be picky. We're just trying to win games. It doesn't matter the situation or who we're playing against."

Still, Ortiz continued his dominance against the Yankees, with two doubles and a pair of runs. He was also walked intentionally in the second inning and hit by a Cesar Cabral pitch when the Red Sox put together a four-run seventh.

Ortiz had only been hit once by the Yankees before, when CC Sabathia got him on June 10, 2011.

That led to an angry response at the time from Ortiz — mostly directed at members of the media, who he accused of placing too much of an emphasis on the Yankees having never hit him.

"I just want to thank you guys," Ortiz told reporters at the time. "Not all of you, [but] most of you, for the stat today of me not getting hit by the Yankees. I finally got hit. Hope you [expletives] are happy.''

This time, Cabral's pitch did not appear to be intentional, especially considering the Yankees had just tied the game 4-4 in the top of the inning.

Ortiz agreed.

"It wasn't on purpose," Ortiz said. "The kid flat out missed his location. It was nothing crazy."

Still, Shane Victorino, who had earlier been hit in the elbow by a Hiroki Kuroda pitch, stared at Cabral as he walked toward second and then a baseball appeared to be thrown from the stands down the third base line, toward the mound.

Whatever displeasure the Red Sox may have had was erased when they took advantage of Preston Claiborne for a third straight outing.

The rookie right-hander has been effective out of the bullpen for most of the season, but Boston seems to have figured him out.

In his last three outings — all against the Red Sox — Claiborne has coughed up eight earned runs in just 1 ²/₃ innings.

Friday night, he surrendered a decisive grand slam to Jarrod Saltalamacchia after the Yankees had battled back from a 4-0 deficit.

Without the overworked David Robertson and the injured Boone Logan, manager Joe Girardi had no choice but to stick with Claiborne and the Red Sox took another step toward burying the Yankees.
