MLB: Chen, Butler lead Royals past Red Sox

In Kansas City, Mo., Bruce Chen outdueled Jon Lester, and Billy Butler added a home run, as the Royals defeated the Red Sox, 5-1.

In Pittsburgh, Russell Martin's pinch-hit single with two outs in the 10th inning lifted the Pirates over the Marlins, 5-4.

In Cleveland, Max Scherzer became baseball's first 17-game winner and the Tigers posted their 12th straight victory, routing the Indians, 10-3. Before the game, the Indians designated slumping slugger Mark Reynolds for assignment.

In San Francisco, Tim Lincecum allowed one hit over eight shutout innings and led the Giants past the Brewers, 4-1.

The Rangers put in a claim for the White Sox's Alex Rios, according to ESPN. Chicago has to decide whether to trade him to Texas, give him up without a trade or hold onto Rios.

Joe Torre will receive the 2013 William A. "Bill" Shea Little League Graduate of the Year award, given to the person who "best exemplifies the spirit of Little League Baseball."

NCAA: Former D-II star died of pneumonia; had CTE

Cullen Finnerty, a former Division II college football star who disappeared last May in the Michigan wilderness during a fishing trip, died of pneumonia caused by inhaling his vomit, after he became disoriented possibly because of painkillers combined with having a degenerative brain disease, according to an updated autopsy.

According to the autopsy, his anxiety and paranoia in the woods may have been exacerbated by an "elevated" level of oxycodone and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), the brain disease that has been found in several ex-football players.

ETC: Jury duty, but no trials, for LeBron

LeBron James' court time had nothing to do with basketball. James was back in his hometown for jury duty, serving his "civic duty," though the Heat star never had the chance to serve as a juror.

Wimbledon champion Andy Murray tumbled out of the Rogers Cup, in Toronto, falling 6-4, 6-3 to Latvia's Ernests Gulbis in the third round. Rafael Nadal won his third-round match, beating Poland's Jerzy Janowicz 7-6 (6), 6-4.

The United States broke into the top 20 of the FIFA rankings for the first time in more than two years after winning last month's Gold Cup. The U.S. rose three places in the rankings released to No. 19, the same spot it reached in March 2011.
