It’s time to turn out the lights on these brutal Bombers

CHICAGO — A-Rod didn't accept the suspension, but the Yankees did.

See you in Tampa in February. It's all over. Get ready for 2014 and beyond. The Yankees are going nowhere this season.

When last night's stunning, 6-5 loss in 12 innings to the White Sox was complete, the equipment truck was parked right next to the visiting clubhouse at U.S. Cellular Field. It truly was a getaway night — to the Yankees' season of injury and poor play.

This one got away from the Yankees on a game-winning, two-run, two-out triple to deep center by Alejandro De Aza off Adam Warren, the fourth Yankees pitcher of the night, a sprint-off triple. It was that kind of night.

The White Sox had no one on base with two outs when the winning rally started.

"We all believe we have a good team,'' Warren said. "We have to play like we are a good team.''

A lot of Yankees had a hand in this loss — even the Great Mariano Rivera, who allowed the game to be tied in the bottom of the ninth, 4-4, on Adam Dunn's two-out, pinch-single past Alex Rodriguez.

The Yankees took the lead in the 12th on Robinson Cano's home run to deep right-center, but it was not enough. Nothing is enough for these Yankees.

The Bombers hit rock bottom, getting swept by a team that came into the week with the second-worst winning percentage in baseball and on a 10-game skid. In this series, the Yankees went 3-for-33 with runners in scoring position. The Yankees lost the final five of six games on this trip.

They have no chance to recover from this loss, the 14th loss in the last 20 games. In one way, this loss does these overmatched Yankees a favor. They can start the rebuilding process for next February in Tampa and 2014. There is so much work to be done.

The 2013 Yankees really had no chance because of injuries and key personnel decisions that backfired on them, and the façade is not only on Yankee Stadium.

CC Sabathia, who allowed three runs in 7 1/3 innings, finally delivered a quality start, but it's too little, too late.

This entire trip was a horror show for the Yankees in so many ways, but two plays in the top of the 11th put this game in perspective. With pinch-runner Jayson Nix at first base, Brett Gardner lifted a pop to right field. The White Sox had turned a previous pop by Vernon Wells in the third inning into a run-scoring hit on this windy night in the Windy City.

Nix, though, got caught going back to first base and also slipped, so when second baseman Gordon Beckham finally picked up the bouncing ball he had time to throw to second for the force for the first out of the inning. Instead of runners on first and second and no out, there was one out and Gardner at first.

Gardner stole second, but Ichiro Suzuki flied to center for the second out with Gardner going to third. That brought Rodriguez to the plate and the loud and nasty boos came raining down once again. In other seasons, A-Rod might have come up with a big hit, but in just his third game back, the suspended and playing on appeal one-time slugger hit a weak grounder to third to end the inning.

The Yankees, now 0-3 with Rodriguez in the lineup, are just one game over .500 now at 57-56. The Red Sox won again so the Yankees are 11 1/2 games back in in the AL East.

This is not 1978. This is 2013 and the aging Yankees have no chance to make a miracle run.

In the watered down wild-card race, the Yankees must jump over four teams. That's not happening either.

They are not a good team. They are not going anywhere.

Come February, they can start all over again.
