Robin Thicke must slowly be starting to resent "Blurred Lines."
It's been No. 1 all summer long to the point of irritation, it's bought him criticism for its racy lyrical content and embroiled him in an increasingly unpleasant legal battle with Marvin Gaye's estate, which is alleging plagiarism.
Last night at Terminal 5 where the soul boy was headlining a charity bash intended to benefit Life Beat (a charity designed to spread awareness of AIDS and HIV through music), it was also the only song that many in the invited audience wanted to hear. Wisely, he got it out of the way first and predictably, blew the roof off the place. If Thicke is tired of the song, it didn't show, and even after months of constant airplay, he made it sound as fun as it was the first few (hundred) times.
The rest of his six-album back catalog doesn't hold anything as memorable and over the course of his 50- minute set, it was a disparity that was all too obvious.
The schmaltzy "Pretty Little Heart" felt plastic and unconvincing while the cringeworthy piano ballad "Dreamworld" was one notch above bottom of a hotel cabaret, both in sound and sentiment.
With interest waning and the crowd thinning, Thicke tossed in a cover of Al Green's "Let Stay Together" as well as an excerpt of Kanye West's GOOD Music track "Clique." It was supposed to be the big finish, but ended up as a bizarre and seemingly desperate conclusion to a fluff-filled gig.
Earlier in the night, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis fulfilled the role of "surprise special guests" with a no-frills set.
After enjoying sudden success with two No. 1s back to back, the duo are now faced with the challenge of proving that they're more than just a flash in the pan, bozo-rap act.
Even though they only played for 30 minutes, there was much to admire. The years of self-released music and underground touring have made Macklemore a surprisingly nimble rapper and his verses on "White Walls" and "Can't Hold Us" showed as much.
If their current purple patch doesn't last, he might also want to consider a career in observational standup. "There's some grown ass sexy women here tonight — a k a Robin Thicke's fan base," Macklemore quipped at one point.
