Former City Councilman Eric Gioia's SUV was set on fire in his Queens driveway early yesterday morning, in an apparently random arson attack, police said.
Gioia — A Democrat who served three terms from 2002 through 2009 — said he was awakened by a loud "thump'' at about 5 a.m. and saw his 2007 Mercury Mariner in flames outside his Sunnyside home.
"I'm very grateful that my family is safe," Gioia said last night. "It could have been far worse. The goal now is to catch the guy."
Police said there was "no specific evidence" that Gioia's car was targeted.
A young man wearing a white T-shirt was caught on a surveillance camera as he set fire to a nearby Dumpster before setting the SUV ablaze, police said.
