CORTLAND — The Jets had their most physical and sloppiest practice of training camp Friday — highlighted by their first goal-line drill.

The defense got the best of the offense: The first-team offense scored once on five plays and the second-team offense scored once in four plays.

"The defense won the goal-line drill, flat out," quarterback Mark Sanchez said.

Coach Rex Ryan singled out defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson for his performance in the drill. The Jets did not score one rushing touchdown with running backs Bilal Powell, John Griffin and Chad Spann all getting stopped.

Geno Smith hit tight end Konrad Reuland for a touchdown (he had another nullified by offensive pass interference.) Sanchez, working with the second team, found tight end Hayden Smith for a score.

The practice featured a ton of penalties and a rash of sloppy play that has not been seen much in camp.

The play of the day came during a short-yardage period on a throw from Smith to Powell, who ran a wheel route and raced down the sideline for a score.

The goal-line period ended after rookie center Dalton Freeman suffered a high ankle sprain, according to a source. Ryan was unsure of the severity of the injury. Freeman has been having a strong camp and is a favorite of Ryan's.

* Running back Chris Ivory has no idea when his ailing hamstring will allow him to practice or if he will play in Saturday night's Green and White scrimmage.

"No timetable," the new Jet said of his status. "I'm going to continue to feel it out."

* Rookie defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson is flying under the radar a bit because fellow rookies Smith and cornerback Dee Milliner have a higher profile. That's all right with him.

"That's good," Richardson said. "Hopefully they sleep on me the rest of the season. I'll just surprise them towards the end of the season so that's good for me, I don't mind it."

* Milliner practiced fully and said his surgically repaired shoulder feels fine. ... Running back Joe McKnight left practice with an undisclosed injury. It looked as if he may have hurt his head after a collision. ... Receiver Braylon Edwards and tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. had a scheduled day offfrom practice. ... Receivers Titus Ryan and Marcus Davis did not practice.
