Ride on! Bike-share set to launch

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 16 April 2013 | 17.08

The city yesterday unveiled its long-awaited bike-share program, which will make 6,000 three-speed bikes available to riders at 330 locations next month.

A one-day pass for $9.95 or a seven-day pass for $25 will unlock a bicycle at one of the NYC Bike Share stations from Midtown Manhattan to inner Brooklyn.

A rider can use a bike for 30 minutes per trip without incurring additional charges, and the bike can be returned at any station.

A $95 annual membership will include 45-minute rides as well as $10 discounts to buy helmets.

"Forty-five minutes is the right time to take the kind of trips and get to the kind of places that New Yorkers go," Sadik-Khan said. "Half of all trips in New York City are under two miles, so this is truly a key to the city."

The bike stations will have maps of the surrounding neighborhood, including parks and nearby bike shops.

"We're hoping the helmet discount will drive business into our stores," said Karen Overton, executive director of Recycle-A-Bicycle. She said that experience of bike-sharing in other cities shows that ridership expands.

"I think we're going to have a hard time keeping up," said Overton, who has shops on the Lower East Side and DUMBO in Brooklyn.

Some details of the city's program had been known in advance but officials disclosed for the first time yesterday that the fees for passes and annual memberships would also be subject to tax.

Sadik-Khan stressed that the program is financed by Citibank and Master Card, and "there's zero taxpayer dollars involved."
