WASHINGTON — The federal government yesterday approved full funding — $1.4 billion — of four Hurricane Sandy-related flood-prevention projects in New York, saving state and local governments a fortune.
The biggest project is $750 million for shoring up 83 miles of Long Island beaches between Fire Island and Montauk Point, a project planned since 1960.
The plan includes raising some homes along the coast.
"First, it means there will be no delay in rebuilding," Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) said yesterday.
"Second it means New York taxpayers are not at risk. It's a huge shot in the arm."
A project in Rockaway Beach, Queens, involves building dunes along some 6.2 miles of the shoreline.
It is expected to cost some $300 million.
The Rockaway project will also involve building new seawalls.
