Gun slay at att’y home

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 03 September 2013 | 17.08

A 23-year-old woman was found shot dead yesterday in a luxury Westchester town house owned by a prominent Manhattan entertainment lawyer, police said.

The woman was discovered at around 4:30 p.m. at the West Main Street address in Tarrytown and pronounced dead at the scene.

She did not live in the house and the shooting was deemed suspicious, according to reports.

Cops had not yet called the shooting a homicide and said suicide has not been ruled out, according to Patch.com. The Web site said "several weapons" were found at the scene.

Records show the $1.7 million digs are owned by Robert Gaulin, founder of the Gaulin Group, which handles licensing of literary titles such as Kurt Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse Five" and Cornell Woolrich's "Rear Window."

Can’t ruffle these feathers

Stormy skies couldn't dampen spirits at yesterday's West Indian Day Parade in Brooklyn.

Thousands of revelers packed Eastern Parkway, turning it into a kaleidoscope of floats and feathered costumes from around the Caribbean.

"I love the energy," said Marlene Henry, 51, who is of Guyanese descent. "

Winefred Gooden, 63, waving her hands in the air, said simply, "I love everything, everything."

US Open notes

* Camila Giorgi was born in Italy, more than 4,000 miles from New York. But the fans in Flushing have been behind the unseeded underdog all tournament long, including yesterday when she lost in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to countrywoman Roberta Vinci in the fourth round.

* "It was really nice, the [crowd and fans], but it wasn't my day," Giorgi said.

* On Saturday, the 21-year old played her first match under the lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium in what was supposed to be an easy match for No. 6 seed Caroline Wozniacki. But Giorgi had other ideas, winning in three sets. Yesterday, on the much smaller Grandstand, she couldn't muster much, losing almost half of her service games while making 35 unforced errors to just five by the 10th-seeded Vinci.

* "It was two great weeks coming back from two months without playing, so I'm happy I came back to play," Giorgi said. "And I played [at a] really good level. Now I will still keep going and play more tournaments."

* Giorgi, who has been nursing a right shoulder injury, last played in June, when she lost in the third round at Wimbledon. The fourth-round appearance here matched her run at Wimbledon in 2012 for her best effort at a major.

* Vinci, who won the doubles title at the U.S. Open last year, earned her second-straight trip to the quarterfinals. She wasn't shocked the crowd was pro-Giorgi.

* "When I was on the court, I was just thinking about my game, not the public, not the crowd," Vinci said. "Camila is a younger player. Of course the public wants Camila to go to the quarterfinal or semifinal."

* There will be a roof in place on Arthur Ashe Stadium by 2016, which means there's three years until the end of days like yesterday, when rain and soggy conditions led to long delays, cancellations and a lot of disgruntled fans.

* The Giorgi-Vinci match was the only one completed before the 4-hour, 21-minute delay, which caused fans to scramble for cover in gift shops and under the tents at the food courts.

* The fourth-round match between Ana Ivanovic and Victoria Azarenka was postponed until 11 a.m. today, though there were vacant courts in the afternoon. The winner will have to play in the quarterfinals the following day.

* Several doubles matches — including the Williams' sisters — were cancelled, and Roger Federer, who had not played on a court other than Ashe since 2006, saw his match bumped to Louis Armstrong Stadium. It was the fourth time in eight days that rain caused a delay or cancellation.

* The USTA said yesterday's ticket holders could exchange their tickets for similar seats for the 2014 tournament.

* The U.S. Open and French Open are the only two Grand Slam sites that do not have roofs, but both have plans for them in the future.

* Nine "Wounded Warriors" were honored during Military Appreciation Day, enjoying the matches from a luxury suite in Ashe Stadium. Two are native New Yorkers: Sergeant Bryan Dilberian of Brooklyn and Sergeant Chris Bustamante of Freeport.

David’s spark may dim lights for Hughes

It has been clear for some time the main reason the Yankees haven't seriously considered removing Phil Hughes from the starting rotation was the fact they had no one else to turn to.

That might not be the case anymore.

Manager Joe Girardi said he wasn't prepared to make any moves following yesterday's 9-1 demolition of the White Sox, but he also didn't say Hughes was guaranteed another start after a rain-shortened outing.

"I haven't made any decisions about changing the rotation," the manager said. "It's unfortunate the rain came after 1 1/3 innings and we had to do this."

PEN-ULTIMATE: Thanks to a solid relief outing following a rain delay yesterday, David Huff has forced his way into the rotation conversation after the Yankees' 9-1 trouncing of the White Sox yesterday.

GARDY TIME: Brett Gardner laces a first-inning double during the Yankees' 9-1 triumph yesterday.

Hughes' day ended after the game was delayed for 1 hour, 53 minutes in the top of the second, and lefty David Huff took over and was fantastic, limiting the White Sox to only a seventh-inning homer by Paul Konerko.

Claimed off waivers from the Indians in May, Huff has been excellent of late. He also tossed five shutout innings against the Blue Jays on Aug. 21 and 3 1/3 scoreless innings against Toronto five days later.

Yesterday, he went 5 2/3 innings and improved to 2-0.

"Those were big innings for us," Girardi said. "We didn't have to use four or five guys."

When asked if he might use Huff as a starter again, Girardi made no guarantees.

"I don't know what we're going to do," he said. "I have to see how our starters are physically doing, if someone needs an extra day. We'll play it by ear, I guess."

The Yankees were able to keep pace with the A's and Orioles — and pick up a game on the Rays — thanks to an eight-run fourth inning that made Huff's job easier.

The Yankees started the fourth with seven straight baserunners reaching against Dylan Axelrod. All came around to score.

Alex Rodriguez led off with a double to right, stumbling between first and second, but arriving safely. Vernon Wells followed with a comebacker Axelrod couldn't come up with for a single and Rodriguez stayed at second. A walk to Curtis Granderson loaded the bases for Mark Reynolds, who was credited with an infield hit on his grounder to third, scoring Rodriguez.

Austin Romine then delivered a two-run single before Brett Gardner doubled for the second time in the game to knock in another run. Jeter's single added another run and Alfonso Soriano's double to left knocked in yet another. Wells hit into a fielder's choice that first baseman Adam Dunn threw away, allowing two more runs to score.

None of that helped Hughes, who hasn't won since July 2 — or at Yankee Stadium since May 15.

"He looked really good," Romine said of Hughes' brief appearance. "That's just how it's going for him ... I firmly thought this was the one he'd turn it around."

The catcher was also impressed with Huff, who Romine said commanded both sides of the plate well.

Before the game, Girardi acknowledged another bad performance could cost Hughes his spot in the rotation — and a lack of better options had likely preserved it this long.

"You look at what he's done in the past and he's struggled this year at times, there's no doubt about it," Girardi said. "You could talk about replacing him, but two of the guys we possibly would have replaced him with [David Phelps and Michael Pineda] are injured, so he has to get it done and we expect him to get it done."

With Phelps only playing catch and not close to returning and Pineda mostly just an afterthought at this point, Girardi's options could now include Huff.

And with the Yankees having no margin for error the rest of the year, Hughes may be running out of time.

"I'm obviously available and ready to go," Hughes said, insisting he wasn't bitter about his fate yesterday. "A win's a win. We need every one we can get at this point."

‘Mann’ on boy abuse

A Horace Mann sex-abuse victim who received a higher than average settlement from the elite private school because he complained four times that he was being molested says administrators gave offenders "a license to abuse" by ignoring his pleas for help.

Stephen Fife, a writer living in Los Angeles, claims he had one of the strongest legal claims against the school for sexual abuse he suffered at the hands of English teacher Robert J. Berman.

"Going back to Watergate, it's the coverup, not the crime, that is unforgivable," Fife, 60, said.

Berman is accused of abusing at least five victims.

STEPHEN FIFE - Big settlement from school.

STEPHEN FIFE
Big settlement from school.

Fife couldn't disclose the amount of his settlement because he signed a confidentiality agreement.

The school has refused to allow an internal investigation into the widespread scandal that enveloped about 50 students and 20 teachers from the 1970s through the 1990s, despite demands by survivors.

Instead, the Bronx institution has paid out $4 million to $5 million to 27 former students, who had to agree to a gag order in return.

The average payout was about $150,000.

Fife's attorney, Gloria Allred, believed she had a solid challenge to the statute of limitations because Fife had lodged so many complaints.

Berman allegedly tried to convince Fife to sleep with him by saying that the Greeks did it, Socrates slept with Plato and Plato slept with his students.

"I'd say, 'Well that was then and this is now,' " Fife said.

Berman never succeeded in raping Fife, but did accost him in a hotel room during a trip to DC, shoving his tongue into Fife's mouth and pushing him onto a bed.

Fife reported the encounter to the head of the school, Philip Leeworth, in 1970. Leeworth is now deceased.

He referred Fife to guidance counselor William Clinton, who Fife says warned him that "I would only hurt myself and my chance of getting into a good college if I made any public declaration against Berman."

Fife went back to Clinton — who has since died — in 1994 and asked him why he protected Berman.

"He told me he now was forced to believe that, in fact, Berman had been molesting students, but he thought Berman was the most brilliant person he had ever met. He felt students were lucky to have a chance to study with him," Fife said.

Berman, who lives in upstate New York, has denied having sex with his students.

Digital detox for ’Net junkies

Written By Unknown on Senin, 02 September 2013 | 17.08

A Pennsylvania hospital will soon become the nation's first to offer an inpatient program for Internet addicts.

Behavioral Health Services at the Bradford Regional Medical Center in Bradford, Pa., will launch a 10-day, $14,000 rehab program a week from today.

"Internet addiction is a problem in this country . . . that can be more pervasive than alcoholism,'' Kimberly Young, the psychologist who founded the nonprofit program, told Fox News.

In the hospital wing already occupied by patients with addictions of other sorts, groups of four internet addicts will take classes and take part in the sort of group therapy traditionally reserved for chemical addicts.

A stay at the digital detox will cost around $14,000 and insurance won't cover it.

Anyone can get hooked on their keyboard, according to former addict Kevin Roberts, author of "Cyber Junkie: Escape the Gaming and Internet Trap."

Roberts, 44, said he would sit for up to 12 hours a day playing video games. During holidays, he "binged" and spent nearly all waking hours at his screen.

"Like most addicts, I went through a series of self-deceptions," said Roberts.

Man busted for ‘revenge’ sex video

An unemployed Brooklyn man secretly videotaped himself having sex with his girlfriend and then posted the romps on Craigslist and a porn Web site after she broke up with him, sources said.

Robert Press, 29, who lives at home with his mother, was charged with unlawful surveillance after he allegedly shared the video of his intimate moments with the 32-year-old woman from Staten Island.

Cops said Press suffers from agoraphobia, an anxiety disorder.

The woman, a city EMS worker, got wind of the deed and ordered Craigslist to remove the video.

But she was apparently not as successful with the porn site, which continues to share the session.

Cops said she didn't know she was being taped.

Press was arraigned Saturday night in Brooklyn Supreme Court, where his bail was set at $250,000.

It was not immediately known where the videos were taken.

The woman could not be reached for comment.

Baby shot dead

A 16-month-old boy was fatally shot in the head last night by a killer who had been gunning for his dad, a police source said.

Little Antiq Hennis was struck down in front of his horrified parents, who were pushing him along a Brooklyn street in his stroller.

He died at Brookdale Hospital at 8:50 p.m. about an hour after the gunman opened fire at Bristol Street and Livonia Avenue in Brownsville.

"I heard three to four shots," said a witness, Gina Gamboa, 23. "I saw a man with a stroller screaming, 'My baby got shot! My baby got shot.'

"He was going crazy.''

Antiq Hennis: "Just learning to walk."

Police believe the bullet — which struck Antiq in the left side of his skull — had been meant for his father, Anthony Hennis, who has a record of more than 20 arrests in New York and Pennsylvania.

They include busts for narcotics, weapons possession, assault and car theft, according to the source.

Gamboa said that after the smoke cleared, she could see the toddler lying in his stroller.

"The baby's chest was moving, but his head was tilted to the side," she said. "There was blood all over the stroller.''

The little boy had been "vibrant and full of energy," said the victim's distraught uncle, Chris Dovsen.

"He was just starting to learn how to walk. He was just getting the hang of it. And now this happened.

"Just yesterday he was playing with a basketball."

The dad, Dovsen said, has been a "changed man'' since becoming a father.

Bishop Willie Billips, of the nearby Church of Faith, Hope and Charity, drove the mom, Cherise Miller, and dad to Brookdale Hospital to identify their only child. "It was horrible," Billips said.

"I'm furious at what happened. I'm outraged at the murder of a 1-year-old baby. I'm sick of what's happening in this neighborhood.''

Police were still hunting for the gunman early this morning.

Journo who nailed Nixon

Veteran British broadcaster David Frost — best remembered for his post-Watergate interviews with former President Richard Nixon — has died of a heart attack at age 74.

Frost succumbed Saturday night aboard the Queen Elizabeth cruise ship, where he was due to give a speech.

In a television career that spanned half a century across both sides of the Atlantic, Frost interviewed a long list of the world's most powerful and famous, including virtually every British prime minister and US president of his time. He also was a gifted entertainer, and his amiable and charming personality was often described as the key to his success as an interviewer.

BATTLE OF WITS: David Frost (left) with former President Richard Nixon in 1977.

Frost began his career almost fresh out of college as host of an early-1960s satirical news show on the BBC, "That Was The Week That Was." A US version in the mid-'60s was wildly popular.

He became internationally known in 1977 with a series of TV interviews with Nixon.

The two sparred through the first, but Frost later said he realized he didn't have what he wanted as it wound down. Nixon had acknowledged mistakes, but Frost pressed him.

Americans, Frost said, wanted to hear Nixon acknowledge abuse of power — and "unless you say it, you're going to be haunted for the rest of your life."

"That was totally off-the-cuff," Frost later said. "That was totally ad-lib. In fact, I threw my clipboard down just to indicate that it was not prepared in any way . . . I just knew at that moment that Richard Nixon was more vulnerable than he'd ever be in his life. And I knew I had to get it right."

After more pressing, Nixon relented. "I let the American people down, and I have to carry that burden with me for the rest of my life," he said.

The face-off spawned a hit play, which, in turn, became an Oscar-nominated 2008 movie, "Frost/Nixon," starring Michael Sheen as Frost and Frank Langella as Nixon.

Frost is survived by his wife, Carina, and their three sons.
