INSIDE THE MATCHUPS

METS: Hefner had a strong month of June, hurling 30 innings in five starts, striking out 23 and letting up just six earned runs (1.80 ERA). He couldn't compensate for the Mets' defensive lapses, though: He was charged with unearned runs in four of the five outings, nine in all.

D'BACKS: Corbin, a candidate to start the All-Star Game, has notched a quality start in 14 of his 16 outings this season. Corbin has been stuck at nine wins since June 2, receiving no-decisions in his past five starts despite a 2.55 ERA in that span.

STAT SO?

METS: David Wright finished June with a .343 average, his highest in a month since May 2012, when he batted .347.

D'BACKS: Arizona is 15-1 when Corbin starts.

Mets rookie Satin makes best of Ike’s absence

The Mets insist they have no idea when they will recall Ike Davis from Triple-A, no clue how long they will leave their first baseman in Las Vegas searching for his lost swing. But with Josh Satin filling in ably, they can afford to leave Davis in the minors until his stroke and his focus are major league ready.

"There's no timetable. I hope when he comes back, whenever that is, that he's ready to go,'' general manager Sandy Alderson told The Post before last night's series opener against the Diamondbacks.

Manager Terry Collins echoed those sentiments, saying he had spoken with Las Vegas manager Wally Backman and he wants to ensure Davis is 100 percent comfortable before he's promoted, as much for his own sake as the Mets'. That was unlikely to happen with the Mets facing three consecutive southpaws in the Nationals' Gio Gonzalez (on Sunday) and the Diamondbacks' Wade Miley and Patrick Corbin.

STREAKY HITTER: Josh Satin, getting most of the playing time at first base for the Mets with Ike Davis at Triple-A, carried a six-game hitting streak into last night.

Bill Kostroun

STREAKY HITTER: Josh Satin, getting most of the playing time at first base for the Mets with Ike Davis at Triple-A, carried a six-game hitting streak into last night.

"I want to make sure that the adjustments he's made in his swing he's comfortable with,'' Collins said. "He got off to a bit of a slow start, then he got hot, and now he's back [struggling]. I know boredom can set in, especially after he was as hot as he was to where he thinks he's ready to go, to now I'm going through the motions. I talked with Wally, he really likes the progress [Davis has] made.

"But there's nothing wrong with a few more at-bats. ... The worst thing that can happen is for Ike Davis to come right now and have him face Corbin, Miley, Gio Gonzalez and all of a sudden have him go 2-for-15, and have everybody in the ballpark think he's not a big league hitter. That's not what I want. We want to make sure when we do it, we do it at the right time, so he's back bursting with confidence and playing the way we know he can.''

Many think the Mets waited far too long to send Davis down in the first place. That fact Satin went into last night having reached base in 11 straight games lends credence to that viewpoint.

In five games at Triple-A from June 19 to 24, Davis hit .563 with five home runs, six walks and seven RBIs. But in the five games prior to yesterday, he hit just .176 with no homers and no RBIs.

"He's a very good player and a good friend of mine, so I want him to do well. If when he comes back, he's playing and I'm not, that's fine,'' Satin said. "Obviously I want to play, but I just want to put myself in the best position to be a part of this team in the future, whatever way that is. If that's coming off the bench, fine.''

Satin came into last night on a career-high six-game hitting streak during which he was 9-for-21 (.429). He said increased playing time has helped him relax at the plate and be more patient. Collins said the 28-year-old has a lot of movement in his swing, making it hard for him to get into a rhythm with irregular playing time.

"I've come up just for spurts, but hopefully my play until he comes back allows me to be a part of this team in the future, because I think I can help the team," said Satin, who was called up on June 11, the day after Davis was demoted. "I think we have a bright future in the coming years, and I want to be a part of it.

"It's definitely a small sample size. I haven't proven anything. But more so than ever, I've let them know I can play at this level. But I have a long way to go to really prove to them I can be a valuable piece of this team in the future when we're ready to contend, which hopefully is soon.''

Mets win marathon on bases-loaded jolt in 13th

Finally, a marathon for the Mets that ended in exhilarated exhaustion.

"It was just a fun inning," Andrew Brown said after his two-run single in the 13th inning gave the Mets a 5-4 victory over the Diamondbacks at Citi Field. "That's the way it's supposed to be written up, I guess, right?"

After losing to the Marlins in 15 and 20 innings, respectively, earlier this season, this 5-hour, 13-minute tussle was more bearable for the Mets.

Cody Ross' solo homer in the 13th off David Aardsma put the Diamondbacks ahead before Josh Satin started the winning rally with a double off Josh Collmenter in the bottom of the inning. John Buck was intentionally (and questionably) walked and ace Matt Harvey entered as a pinch-hitter for Aardsma. Manager Terry Collins elected to have Harvey sacrifice bunt the runners to second and third. Then Omar Quintanilla was intentionally walked and Brown won it at 12:24 a.m. with a single to left-center that scored two runs.

DREW IT UP: Andrew Brown raises his arms after striking the game-winning single with the bases loaded in the 13th inning as the Mets beat the Diamondbacks, 5-4, last night at Citi Field.

DREW IT UP: Andrew Brown raises his arms after striking the game-winning single with the bases loaded in the 13th inning as the Mets beat the Diamondbacks, 5-4, last night at Citi Field.

The Mets also got a huge performance from their bullpen, with Carlos Torres, Josh Edgin, LaTroy Hawkins, Bobby Parnell and Aardsma allowing one run over seven innings behind Shaun Marcum.

"If you're going to be out there that long, you might as well win the game," Collins said. "You want to win the game bad. We were out of pitching, I can tell you that. We were getting low on pitching, so I was glad we won when we did."

Though Buck walked three times — twice intentionally batting ahead of the pitcher — he finished 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and six runners left on base on a night the Mets stranded 20.

Satin's RBI single in the ninth against ex-Met J.J. Putz scored Marlon Byrd with the tying run. Byrd doubled with one out — nearly clearing the left-field fence to tie the game — and wasn't stopping on Satin's single to left moments later. Ross' throw home beat Byrd, but catcher Miguel Montero couldn't hold on.

"Losing a game like this, I don't want to say [would be] devastating, but it definitely makes it not worth it," Satin said. "Winning a game like this just makes the 5 1/2 hours or whatever we were out there that much more worth it."

The Mets had a big opportunity in the eighth, when Eric Young Jr.'s RBI double sliced the Diamondbacks' lead to one, but Daniel Murphy left the tying run at third base when he popped out against David Hernandez.

It was a rally that started with Quintanilla's triple, on a ball Gerardo Parra nearly caught crashing to the ground on the warning track in right. Parra remained on the ground for several minutes and eventually walked off the field with an evident shoulder injury, and Young doubled moments later to bring the Mets within 3-2.

Marcum rebounded from a shaky start to last six innings in which he allowed three earned runs on six hits and three walks. The veteran righty had his best performance of the year in his previous start, pitching eight shutout innings against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field for his first victory of the season.

David Wright's RBI single in the seventh finally got the Mets on the board, but there could have been more. Byrd's broken-bat single put the tying runs on base, but Heath Bell retired Satin and Buck to keep the Diamondbacks' lead at 3-1.

The Mets were mostly lost at the plate with runners in scoring position. Buck and Juan Lagares struck out in succession against Wade Miley after Satin doubled to open the sixth. Quintanilla then walked, before pinch-hitter Kirk Nieuwenhuis whiffed against reliever Brad Ziegler.

The Mets squandered early chances against Miley. In the first inning, Buck was caught looking at strike three with the bases loaded to end a threat. The next inning, Young and Murphy struck out in succession to leave runners on second and third. Lagares had doubled leading off the inning and went to third on Quintanilla's single. Marcum then bunted, moving Quintanilla to second while giving up an out.

Aaron Hill's RBI single in the second extended the Diamondbacks' lead to 3-0. Didi Gregorius singled leading off the inning and took second on Miley's sacrifice bunt before Hill delivered the run.

Paul Goldschmidt's two-run homer in the first quickly put Marcum in the hole. Hill was hit by a pitch before Goldschmidt, an early MVP candidate, unloaded for his 20th homer of the season.

Nightmare inferno

Written By Unknown on Senin, 01 Juli 2013 | 17.08

An Arizona wildfire claimed the lives of 19 firefighters yesterday, in the deadliest such tragedy since 9/11.

The doomed crew was desperately battling a blaze that destroyed half the buildings in the small town of Yarnell — 85 miles northwest of Phoenix — as triple-digit temperatures and strong winds fueled the inferno.

Of the 19 dead, all but one were members of a group known as the Granite Mountain Hotshots, which is part of the Prescott, Ariz., Fire Department.

The firefighters were forced to deploy tent-like shelters to shield themselves from the flames and heat, but were overcome by the monumental blaze.

IN THE PATH OF DESTRUCTION: A home is destroyed last night in Arizona's horrific Yarnell Hill Fire.

"The entire Hotshot crew has been killed by the fire," a shattered Prescott Fire Chief Dan Fraijo said.

The emergency shelters had to be deployed, he said, because "something drastic happened."

The Granite Mountain Hotshots, an elite ground firefighting crew formed in 2002, recently battled a massive blaze in the Prescott National Forest.

They came from about 40 miles away to help battle what's being called the Yarnell Hill Fire.

The blaze, ignited Friday by lightening, gained momentum over the weekend. As fast, hot winds tore through the area yesterday, the fire spread out of control.

It burned about 1,300 acres and forced the evacuation of 600 residents in the small town.

Officials said they expected that about half of the town's 500 homes would be destroyed by the blaze.

About 200 firefighters in all were working to contain the blaze.

An additional 130 firefighters and more water- and retardant-dropping helicopters and aircraft were on their way last night.

The disaster was the biggest lost of life for firefighters in state history.

An Arizona State Forestry Division spokesman said the agency was calling in federal help to fight the fire.

Earlier yesterday, the fast-moving fire prompted evacuations of 50 homes in the towns of Buckhorn and Model Creek, about 85 miles northwest of Phoenix.

In the afternoon, the local sheriff's office expanded the evacuations to include residents in the Peeples Valley area, as well as the town of Yarnell. ,

Park ‘attacker’: You asked for it

The man who tried to rape a jogger in Central Park over the weekend snarled to his victim, "You were asking for it," court papers claim.

Saul Alvarez, 21, allegedly grabbed the 29-year-old woman from behind as she walked past Lasker Pool at the north end of the park at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

He put his hand over her mouth, dragged her to a wooded area and tried to rape her, according to a criminal complaint read at his arraignment Saturday.

Alvarez was ordered jailed in lieu of $75,000 bail.

The woman was able to get free by scratching him and screaming, scaring him off, authorities said yesterday.

The incident recalled the infamous attack on a 29-year-old jogger in Central Park decades ago.

On April 19, 1989, Trisha Ellen Meili, was beaten into unconsciousness.

She was found barely alive at around 1:30 a.m. the following day. Meili, who came to be known as "The Central Park Jogger," later revealed her real name and became an inspirational speaker.

Holy gay matrimony!

Days after the Supreme Court used her lawsuit to grant same-sex couples federal marriage benefits, Edith Windsor led the city's Gay Pride march yesterday.

"If somebody had told me 15 years ago that I would be the marshal of New York City's Gay Pride parade in 2013, at the age of 84, I wouldn't have believed it," she said as thousands of revelers celebrated her successful challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act's definition of marriage as between a man and woman.

Windsor got the rock-star treatment from paradegoers, who held "Thank you, Edie" signs along a route lined with floats, banners and costumed celebrants, including one Batman kissing his Robin.

"I'm here today because I spent three years in the service unable to say that I'm gay," said Monica Patron, 25, a Marine from New Jersey. "So I'm here today to say I'm gay and I'm proud. It's awesome. It's beautiful people. I'm laughing. My best friend's here. I'm having a great time. I love the drag queens."

Marchers, some arm in arm, walked the Fifth Avenue route from Midtown to Greenwich Village with their spirits elevated by the high-court rulings that struck down DOMA's denial of benefits to same-sex couples and a ban on gay marriage in California.

"Every year we celebrate," Mayor Bloomberg said just before the march.

"But I think this year there's a lot more to celebrate thanks to the Supreme Court decision. I think what it really says is that this country is maturing as we have with all civil-rights issues over time."

Windsor was overjoyed to be the grand marshal.

"I have marched in the parade for the last several years carrying a huge rainbow flag," she said. "Last year, I was so elated that I danced my way down the whole street for the entire route of the parade."

The NYPD increased security along the route after a recent string of anti-gay crimes.

Giant’s ‘$iren’ busted

A bar-hopping beauty who did an end run around Giants defensive tackle Shaun Rogers and allegedly stole nearly $500,000 in bling from his Miami Beach hotel room has been busted in Queens, cops said yesterday.

Subhanna Beyah, 25, was part of a ring of temptresses that has been picking up men at South Florida hot spots, drugging them unconscious and robbing them blind, authorities said.

Beyah, whose lengthy rap sheet includes grand theft, fraud and prostitution, was nabbed leaving a "family treatment center" in Jamaica on Friday, a law-enforcement source said.

Subhanna Beyah

Subhanna Beyah

New York State Police and Miami detectives had tracked her down while she was on the run from a Florida arrest warrant.

She was arraigned early yesterday and ordered held without bail pending proceedings to return her to the Sunshine State.

Photos of Beyah in an array of hairstyles, colors and contact lenses were released last week after Florida cops tied her and three other women to more than a dozen rip-offs of men ages 33 to 58.

She allegedly told at least one victim her name was Crystal, and a composite sketch of her was released in May with the warning, "Watch out for Crystal."

Authorities say she met Rogers in March at the celeb-friendly Club LIV in the Fountainbleu hotel, where the three-time Pro Bowler was decked out in jewelry.

After taking Beyah and another couple to his hotel room, the 6-foot-4, 350-pounder stashed his bling in the room's safe before hitting the sack while the other three partied on, he said.

When he woke hours later, his date was gone and he couldn't open the safe.

Hotel security unlocked it and Rogers found most of his valuables missing, a police report says.

Rogers, who inked a $1million one-year contract with Big Blue in February, reportedly said the items included a $100,000 pair of diamond earrings, a $70,000 diamond necklace, a $50,000 gold pendant and necklace and two watches worth a combined $160,000.

A Giants rep declined to comment yesterday.

In 2009, Beyah was busted in a series of similar scams pulled on as many as 50 victims — including a powerhouse lawyer and an NYU professor — targeted at Manhattan nightclubs.

Cops said Beyah and two accomplices would offer the men rides home or to parties, then take them to ATMs and peek at their PINs. They later allegedly swiped the mens' wallets and valuables and used their bank cards to withdraw wads of cash.

Cirque du Soleil artist dies after 50-foot fall during Las Vegas show

LAS VEGAS — A Paris-born performer in Cirque du Soleil's "Ka" died after a fall during a show in Las Vegas.

Sarah Guyard-Guillot was pronounced dead late Saturday night at a hospital after falling about 50 feet from the show's stage.

Witnesses told the Las Vegas Sun that the accident occurred near the end of the production Saturday night at the MGM Grand.

Visitor Dan Mosqueda of Colorado Springs, Colo., said the 31-year-old acrobatic performer was being hoisted up the side of the stage when it appeared that she slipped free of her safety wire and plummeted to an open pit below the stage.

AP

Sarah Guyard-Guillot, left, performs during Cirque du Soleil's "Ka" at MGM Grand Resort in Las Vegas.

"Initially, a lot of people in the audience thought it was part of the (show)," he told the Sun. "But you could hear screaming, then groaning, and we could hear a female artist crying from the stage."

The show momentarily continued, then stopped. Minutes after the accident, a recorded announcement informed audience members that refunds or vouchers to future shows would be offered, and the crowd was dismissed.

Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte issued a statement Sunday praising Guyard-Guillot and saying performances of "Ka" have been canceled until further notice.

Guyard-Guillot, a mother of two children, had been with the original cast of "Ka" since 2006, and had been an acrobatic performer for over 20 years.

"I am heartbroken. I wish to extend my sincerest sympathies to the family. We are all completely devastated," Laliberte said. "We are reminded with great humility and respect how extraordinary our artists are each and every night. Our focus now is to support each other as a family."

Cirque officials are working with authorities investigating the accident and have offered their full cooperation, he added.

The Clark County Coroner's Office will rule on the cause of death.

The MGM Grand also issued a statement concerning the accident.

"Our company is deeply saddened by the loss of one of the talented KA artists Saturday night," it reads. "The thoughts and prayers of our employees are with the performer's family, the cast of KA, and the entire Cirque family during this difficult time."

The accident occurred while Cirque's top executives, including president Daniel Lamarre, were in Las Vegas to celebrate the premiere of "Michael Jackson One" at Mandalay Bay.

On Wednesday night, a performer in a preview performance of that show suffered a mild concussion after missing the protective pad below an act and landing on the stage. That artist is expected to return to the show.

Nets owner spends big to win big

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 29 Juni 2013 | 17.08

Mikhail Prokhorov has backed up his words with his wallet.

If anyone was wondering whether the Russian billionaire owner of the Nets was committed to trying to compete for a championship, it's impossible to question him after he empowered general manager Billy King to pull off Thursday night's massive blockbuster trade which brought future Hall of Famers Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, along with Jason Terry, to Brooklyn.

It's just the latest move in the massive transformation the franchise has undergone over the past 12 months, a makeover which has seen the Nets go from an NBA afterthought in their final season in New Jersey to having a potential starting lineup with a combined 35 All-Star Game appearances. It's a lineup ESPN analyst Jeff Van Gundy thinks, right now, is as good as any in the NBA.

"I think, for the short term, the Nets certainly have the best starting lineup talent-wise in the NBA," Van Gundy said in an interview on ESPN 98.7 FM yesterday.

Not only does the trade provide the Nets toughness and leadership, it also will mean Prokhorov is set to commit a great deal of money to put this group on the floor next season.

After the moves the Nets made yesterday, their payroll already sits north of $95 million. Assuming the Nets use their mini mid-level exception, which starts at $3.183 million, and fill out their roster with players who sign for the veteran's minimum, their payroll will exceed $100 million.

Under the restrictive luxury tax penalties in the new collective bargaining agreement, the Nets will be facing a luxury tax bill next year of about $80 million. To put that in perspective, only four teams — the Lakers, Nets, Heat and Knicks — had a payroll of $80 million or more last season.

It's also a sign Prokhorov is willing to do whatever it takes to pursue a championship — including dipping into his personal fortune to pay his players — something many other NBA owners have proved unwilling to do.

"I give the ownership of the Nets a lot of credit, because we always hear about luxury taxes and how they can't afford to go over the luxury tax," Van Gundy said. "We often hear the word 'can't' be interjected where the word 'won't' is more descriptive.

"In this case, the Nets ownership put personnel for their team way ahead of profits. And, if you're a fan, you have to understand how rare that is and you have to be excited about the opportunity. Now, if this turns out to be a championship run or not, you have to be excited about an ownership that will put the personnel of a team ahead of the profits of that same team."

That, combined with the fact the Nets shipped out three first-round picks over the next five years in the deal — one each in 2014, 2016 and 2018 — as well as their final significant trade chip in Kris Humphries' $12 million expiring deal, makes it clear this is the move they hope will allow them build on their successful debut season in Brooklyn.

After winning 49 games and finishing with the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference last season, the Nets hope the combination of Pierce, Garnett and Terry — combined with moves in free agency — will allow them to do what Prokhorov has set out to do from the moment he bought the team: compete for a championship.
